In Black ‘n’ White World the Artist represents an African woman hugging a baby.
In spite of the physical conjunction represented by a hug, both the characters apparently play an independent role in this Opera: the woman looks tired, submitted, unhappy and somehow resigned to her fate; the baby instead seems to peacefully rely on her ancestry privileges.
The symbolic meaning of the Work refers to the theme of the social inequalities related to the ethnic origins; each of them is neither guilty or deserving to be part of a specific Region of the world, but they are simply part of the same human race.
The Artist intended to represent each character using a specific technique: instinctive, rough and evident brush strokes for the black woman on one side; on the other the baby is painted smoothly with the addition of “scratches” shaping her elegant look.
The visual effects reflect the Artist’s intentions: The black woman looks wild and exploited, the baby porcelain like and royal.
Using this combined technique the Artist managed to give “different life” to each character, but still keeping them joint as they are part of the common dimension of being humans.
